Spirit Halloween, movie theater set to open this week

ST. CLAIRSVILLE — Ohio Valley residents soon will be able to enjoy movies on the big screen again, as the Ohio Valley Mall’s theater is set to reopen in the coming week.

AMC Theatres will open its doors to the public Thursday after being closed since March in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

Candi Noble-Greathouse, marketing director for the mall, said the mall is anticipating a positive response to the opening.

“We are excited for the opening and our shoppers are, too,” she said.

“Between this week and next week, they (AMC Theatres) will open 200 more theaters,” she said.

Although an official movie lineup has not been announced yet, the theater likely will announce which movies will play in the coming days, she said.

Noble-Greathouse said the theater will abide by the state’s safety guidelines to ensure a safe experience for all involved. Everyone who attends the theater’s showings will be required to wear a facial covering and practice social distancing.

“We’re going to be having some safety protocols in place so everyone can have a nice enjoyable and safe trip to the theaters,” she said.

The theater’s concession stand will be cash-free and will not offer refills for drinks or popcorn. Hand sanitizer stations and wipes will be available to customers, and staff members will routinely clean high-traffic areas throughout the day, she said.

Additionally, Spirit Halloween Store was set to open Saturday in the former Sears location inside the mall. The store will remain open through October.

This is the second year the seasonal shop has taken residence in the former Sears location.

The shop is known for selling seasonal decorations, Halloween costumes, animatronics, movies and accessories, all pertaining to the holiday.

In other mall news, Ferguson’s House of Furniture remains open as it holds a liquidation sale for remaining furniture from the former Levin’s Furniture. The furniture store now resides in the former Levin’s building, located next to ICR Sales & Services at the perimeter of the mall. The building has been empty since Levin’s closed in March.

Noble-Greathouse said the store is open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily and from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sundays.

“Ferguson’s is open every day right now until they have the clearance all taken care of. They’re clearing out all the Levin’s merchandise,” she said.

Currently the store is offering items at 50 percent off; however, the sales may change in the coming weeks.

Once Ferguson’s liquidation sale is complete, the store will then close and reopen in October with all new merchandise. Noble-Greathouse said there is not yet an official grand opening date set.
